New Hampshire Energy Education Program

The NHSaves® utility partners work with the New Hampshire Energy Education Program (NHEEP) to bring hands-on energy education to classrooms across the state. These engaging lessons teach students how energy works, how it affects our environment, and how we can all take action to use energy more efficiently. Explore the key program themes below:

Students learn the basics of energy efficiency, how doing the same work with less energy, benefits our homes, schools, and the planet. Key lessons include:

  • The importance of turning off unused electronics and lights
  • How habits like carpooling and closing windows when heating or cooling can conserve energy
  • Everyday actions to reduce electricity use at home and school

This module helps students understand where electricity comes from and its environmental impact. They discover:

  • How power plants generate electricity, often by burning fuels that harm the atmosphere
  • Why LED lighting is more efficient than incandescent bulbs
  • The importance of reducing electricity use to help the planet

In this program, students explore how heat moves and how we can make homes more energy efficient. They learn:

  • How heat travels through conduction, convection, and radiation
  • That insulation and air sealing are critical for reducing heat loss
  • Why reducing the need for heating fuels benefits both the environment and our wallets

Students discover how they can turn their passion for the environment into a career. This unit highlights:

  • In-demand careers in energy efficiency like auditors, electricians, and engineers
  • Tools of the trade, such as thermal cameras and blower doors
  • How green careers benefit people, the planet, and economic prosperity

Energy Toolkit Teacher Training

Teachers can also take advantage of no-cost NHEEP curriculum to deepen students’ understanding of energy efficiency and conservation. NHEEP will bring full day or half day workshops to your district so teachers can explore energy and efficiecy topics, and a host of exciting hands-on STEM equipment to borrow later.

These workshops:

  • are aligned with Next Generation Science Standards
  • include access to hands-on equipment covering circuits, electricity generation and efficiency measures
  • can be adapted for teachers in different of different age groups or disciplines
  • cover processes we can use to help students choose and design energy conservation projects
